Events In New York City - Where To Go and What To See

If you want to go to some events in New York city, then you need look no further than the Great White Way. Broadway is the place for events in New York city, and it's been that way for a hundred years or more. Broadway doesn't just mean Broadway, though - it means 42nd street, Times Square, and everything else that goes with it. When it comes to events in New York city this is the center for all events in New York.

At the heart of the Broadway, Times Square, 42nd Street experience is, of course, theater. Broadway is to the stage what Hollywood is to film. It's where the best, biggest and brightest go to become stars. It's the place where anyone in the industry who aspires to greatness wants to be. As the saying goes - if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

Some of the most recent events in New York City are of course the shows that make it big on Broadway such as Avenue Q and Wicked. Avenue Q is a personal favorite of mine, sort of a Sesame Street meets Friends meets Richard Pryor. It's set in a fictional neighborhood (Avenue Q) in working class New York, and focuses on a bunch of real life actors interacting on a daily basis with puppets. The puppets range from teachers to regular Joes to porn-addicted monsters. Throughout the whole thing there's an irreverent joie de vivre mixed with an insatiable desire to subvert all the most cherished aspects of musical theater. Avenue Q is also surprisingly adept at confronting social issues like racism, poverty, the fleetingness of fame, and, of course, raw, hardcore puppet sex. It's a hoot.

Wicked is a more traditional Broadway show that features the typical two-act structure and no humping puppets. It's the story of the witches from the Wizard of Oz, the back story of their friendship and eventual falling out that came before the famous events of the film we all know and love. And Wicked is a cultural phenomenon. It's nearing its tenth year on Broadway and it's still the most popular show in town, with no signs of slowing down. When it comes to events New York city style, one of the things you simply have to do is a see a beloved Broadway show like Wicked or Avenue Q.

There are other things to do, of course - it's New York City after all. You could catch some live jazz at Birdland or the Blue Note or Small's. You could celebrate Oktoberfest at Zum Schneider's. You could watch soccer from around the world at Nevada Smith's in the East Village. There are also parades of every type, from the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to the West Village's gay day parade, and so many other events in New York city that your head will be spinning.
